About Simon Dobnik

Researcher in Language Technology/Computational Linguistics
Research Coordinator for Linguistics
Research Coordinator for The Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability
Chair of the Programme Committee for Masters in Language Technology

Research

My main research interest is computational interpretation and generation of spatial descriptions - in particular how to map highly underspecified cognitive spatial expressions to unambiguous representations of space used in physical sciences such as robotics. The mapping between these domains can only be achieved with machine learning. The disambiguation of spatial descriptions relies on the world knowledge about the objects and the scene and may be assisted by collaborative dialogue between conversational agents. Overall, spatial knowledge thus includes both symbolic and distributional information.

I previously worked at the Department of Computer Science at Oxford University on the natural language understanding component and the dialogue manager of the English emotional conversational agent developed within the Companions project and on automatic summarisation of scientific papers within the Sapienta project.

Teaching

I have taught courses in general linguistics, syntax, semantics, formal methods for linguists, computational linguistics for linguists and for computer scientists both at undergraduate and graduate level.

Education

I received my undergraduate (MA), masters (MPhil) and doctoral degree (DPhil) from Oxford University.
